We have been using the monkeybar theme for a while now during our brainstorm meetings and we've finally decided on a way to illustrate the idea for a shirt. The monkeybar is a metaphor for an idea or a belief. It's also a statement on a person's current state-of-mind. There are a couple key ideas that go along with this, though. First of all, there are an infinite number of monkeybars available to us. And secondly, we have the ability to create monkeybars for ourselves and swing from one to another whenever we want.
We use this motif to help us realize what monkeybar we're currently hanging from, and what monkeybar we have the freedom to jump to if we so desire. This idea reminds us that we have the power to change our lives by identifying our current monkeybar, deciding if that's the one that we REALLY want to hang from, and if not, jumping onto the monkeybar that we really want.
First comes recognition ("I'm angry right now because I'm hanging from an angry monkeybar."), then empowerment ("I don't HAVE to hang from this monkeybar if I don't want to - there are plenty others."), and finally, change ("I am NOW hanging from a happy monkeybar."). It's that simple.
We know we can change monkeybars whenever we want and we also know that there's nothing wrong with ANY monkeybar. They're all just monkeybars and none is better or worse than the other (remember Release 001?). This is a great reminder to love everyone regardless of their choice of monkeybar. At Heartyshirts, we don't want to actually shake anyone from their monkeybar, we just want to illuminate other monkeybars that are also available.
Just like on the shirt, we know that we can create a monkeybar and hang from it and be happy - whenever we want, no matter what.
